Tamasa (玉彩) ー Ceramic Matcha Sifting Beads - A: Pastel Pink (3-Piece Set) <-- Procured or produced on demand. PREORDER now to get started.
Preparing matcha begins with sifting the powder to remove clumps and create a smooth, velvety texture. Tamasa (玉彩) is a handcrafted ceramic bead designed to make this process easier while adding beauty to your daily matcha ritual.
Simply place one or more Tamasa beads into your matcha sifter together with the matcha powder. As the bead is gently moved with a chashaku or small spoon, it naturally breaks apart clumps and encourages the matcha to pass smoothly through the mesh. The result is finely sifted matcha that whisks effortlessly into a creamy bowl.
The name Tamasa (玉彩) combines the Japanese characters 玉 (tama), meaning gem or precious bead, and 彩 (sa), meaning color or beauty. Each bead is carefully handcrafted and finished with a unique glaze, bringing together functionality and the quiet elegance of Japanese ceramics.
Though small in size, Tamasa transforms an everyday preparation step into a more enjoyable and refined experience.
How to Use
- Place one or more Tamasa beads into your matcha sifter.
- Add your matcha powder.
- Using a chashaku or small spoon, gently move the bead around the sifter.
- Once the matcha has passed through the mesh, remove the bead and rinse or wipe it clean.

About the Artist
Tamasa is handcrafted by ceramic artist Emi Nakagawa, founder of Emui (笑無為). Originally from Miyoshi in Tokushima Prefecture, she studied the tradition of Kiyomizu-yaki ceramics in Kyoto before establishing her own style using Shigaraki clay from Shiga Prefecture. Her work reflects a philosophy of quiet joy, natural simplicity, and creating pottery that gently complements everyday life. Today, she creates and teaches ceramics in Tokyo while continuing to build her studio in Tokushima.
