Japanese Matcha Meets Japanese Plant-Based Milk: Introducing the Komekoji Matcha Latte

Japanese Matcha Meets Japanese Plant-Based Milk: Introducing the Komekoji Matcha Latte

Mariko Kikuchi |

We’re excited to introduce a new seasonal drink at Yunomi.Matcha in Togoshi Ginza, Tokyo: the Komekoji Matcha Latte.

The latte will be available for a limited time from September 10 through the end of October 2026.

We recently announced the drink in Japan through PR TIMES. You can read the original Japanese press release here:

Below is the English version of the announcement.

Yunomi.Matcha, a matcha stand in Togoshi Ginza, Shinagawa, Tokyo, operated by Yunomi.life, will launch its limited-time Komekoji Matcha Latte on September 10, 2026.

Yunomi.life has spent more than 14 years bringing tea from small-scale tea farmers and producers across Japan to customers around the world.

This new latte combines Komekoji Milk, a plant-based fermented beverage made from rice and rice koji, with matcha whisked fresh to order right in front of the customer.

“If we’re pairing Japanese matcha with plant-based milk, we wanted to choose a plant-based milk made in Japan.”

This idea led to a uniquely Japanese combination of matcha, rice, and rice koji—a new kind of Japanese-style latte.

The Flavor of Komekoji Milk × Matcha

Gentle sweetness and a clean finish

Komekoji Milk has a subtle sweetness and richness reminiscent of amazake, a traditional Japanese fermented rice drink with a naturally sweet, mellow flavor, while maintaining a light and refreshing finish.

A balance that brings out the matcha

The mellow character of rice koji gently softens the bitterness of matcha, while the rich aroma of matcha enhances the natural sweetness of the Komekoji Milk.

The result is a latte where natural, understated sweetness meets rich matcha—a drink that is both light and layered.

Available: September 10 through the end of October 2026 (planned)
Price: ¥950 (tax included)

A New Drink Born from a Connection Between People

Yunomi.Matcha had been exploring the idea of creating a plant-based matcha latte using Japanese ingredients for some time. We experimented with ingredients such as amazake and soy milk while looking for something that would allow matcha to remain the star of the drink.

The turning point came when Koyama-san of Satén, a Japanese tea stand in Setagaya, Tokyo, introduced us to Komekoji Milk.

Until then, we had never considered pairing Komekoji Milk with matcha. But when we tried the combination, its natural sweetness and richness blended beautifully with matcha, while its lightness allowed the aroma of the matcha to shine.

As we continued experimenting, we began to see great potential not only in the combination with matcha, but in Komekoji Milk itself.

When people think of plant-based milk, options such as oat and almond milk often come to mind. Komekoji Milk adds a new option—one made from two deeply familiar Japanese ingredients: rice and rice koji.

We felt that we had discovered a hidden gem in Komekoji Milk.

From one shop to another.

A connection between people through Japanese tea led to a new ingredient, and ultimately, a new drink.

From Snow and Water-Rich Uonuma

Komekoji Milk is a plant-based fermented beverage produced and marketed by Uonuma Jozo, a group company of Marukome, a Japanese company best known for its miso and other traditional fermented foods, in Uonuma, Niigata Prefecture.

Uonuma is a renowned rice-growing region blessed with deep winter snowfall and abundant water. Snow that accumulates in the surrounding mountains melts with the changing seasons, nourishing the region with fresh water.

Komekoji Milk is made from rice grown in Uonuma and rice koji, an essential part of Japan’s traditional fermentation culture.

It contains no added sugar and gets its natural sweetness from rice and rice koji. It contains no dairy or soy and is a plant-based beverage that does not contain any of Japan’s 28 specified allergenic food items.

Bringing Tea from Small-Scale Farmers Around Japan to the World — and Everyday Matcha to Togoshi Ginza

Yunomi.life, the company behind Yunomi.Matcha, has spent more than 14 years bringing tea from small-scale tea farmers and producers across Japan to customers overseas. By connecting producers with customers around the world, Yunomi.life has introduced the diverse character and appeal of Japanese tea.

In June 2026, Yunomi.life opened Yunomi.Matcha in Togoshi Ginza, Shinagawa, Tokyo, as a new base for its next chapter.

While respecting the traditions of Japanese tea, we want to make matcha feel more natural and relevant to modern life.

Matcha doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions or particular places. It can be enjoyed during a break from work, or in the middle of a conversation with someone.

We want people to experience matcha as a natural part of everyday life.

The Japanese tea we have shared with the world is now being served in the streets of Tokyo.

From Togoshi Ginza, Yunomi.Matcha is exploring new ways to enjoy matcha.
