The highest quality, handpicked samidori tea leaves from the Nishikawa Tea Farm in Ujitawara, Kyoto, are refined into beautiful needles of umami deliciousness by the Nishide family. The specific tea field used for these leaves is located at an altitude of 120 meters, and the samidori plants were planted in 1998, making the field 18 years old and in the prime of its life.

The shading of the tea leaves goes a step further than ordinary gyokuro in that it is shaded with direct covering as well as canopy covering reducing the sunlight that reaches the tea leaves to a bare minimum for maximum umami flavor.

Finding the century old Nakamura-en Tea Shop on the eastern side of Tokyo near the Sumo Wrestling Arena (Ryogoku station), tea merchant Nakamura-san taught us more about gyokuro leaf fannings to share with the world.

Nakamura-san does speak a bit of conversational English, so if you are ever in Tokyo do visit his shop!! He has no website though, so simply follow this simple map (GOOGLE MAP).

A high quality gyokuro from the family-owned tea factory, Nagatani Tea. This gyokuro was made from two cultivars that are from the Kyoto prefecture: Gokou and Uji Midori. With the gokou cultivar known for its' rich umami and the Uji Midori characteristic of its aromatic characteristics (floral, creamy aroma), please delight in the dance of these two cultivars!

\nA bit more about these two cultivars (for those who are curious): These two cultivars were specifically developed to suit the soil and climate of Kyoto prefecture. Both are cultivars that are well-suited for shading, therefore, it is often made into gyokuro or matcha. Gokou is perhaps the more common, characteristic with its' earthy aroma and deep umami. The aromatic Uji Midori cultivar was selected in 1985 from a seed of zairai (native) tea bushes from Uji. In comparison to the gokou, it is still quite a rare cultivar perhaps because it does not leave a strong impression with its' lighter umami. \n

A high quality gyokuro from the family-owned tea factory, Nagatani Tea. This gyokuro was made from two cultivars that are from the Kyoto prefecture: Gokou and Uji Midori. With the gokou cultivar known for its' rich umami and the Uji Midori characteristic of its aromatic characteristics (floral, creamy aroma), please delight in the dance of these two cultivars!

\nA bit more about these two cultivars (for those who are curious): These two cultivars were specifically developed to suit the soil and climate of Kyoto prefecture. Both are cultivars that are well-suited for shading, therefore, it is often made into gyokuro or matcha. Gokou is perhaps the more common, characteristic with its' earthy aroma and deep umami. The aromatic Uji Midori cultivar was selected in 1985 from a seed of zairai (native) tea bushes from Uji. In comparison to the gokou, it is still quite a rare cultivar perhaps because it does not leave a strong impression with its' lighter umami. \n

Kyoto, the ancient capital, is perhaps the most famous locale in Japan. A city of World Heritage Sites featuring temples and shrines centuries old, Kyoto is a showcase of traditional Japanese culture. Uji-cha, or tea from the city of Uji, just south of Kyoto, is a cornerstone of the thousand-year history of Kyoto and thus Japan.
Uji-cha is regarded as the origin of Japanese tea production, where the Buddhist monk Eisai started the first tea fields to provide tea to the country's nobility. The leaves are grown primarily in surrounding municipalities (Ujitawara, Wazuka, etc.) and refined by factories in Uji. Uji-cha production dates back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333), and in the 13th century tea fields were founded near the famous Byodo-in temple. As time went by the name of Uji-cha spread throughout Japan, and Sen-no-rikyu, the priest who made the tea ceremony famous, played a critical role in establishing the region's fame. Today, Uji-cha is known for high quality tea such as gyokuro and matcha, as Shizuoka and Kagoshima dominate production of tea on the whole.
