The \"white\" bamboo 白竹 used for the whisk itself is henon bamboo (hachiku 淡竹) that has had its color removed through traditional, centuries-old techniques. A specific type of bamboo grown in the Kinki region of Japan (Nara, Kyoto, Osaka, Wakayama, etc) is harvested in the winter after 2-3 years of growth, boiled to remove oil in the plant, dried in the cold winter air, then aged for another 2-3 years. During this process the green color of the bamboo fades into the \"white\" color of bamboo.

About Kabazaiku
\n
“CHERRY BARK CRAFTWORK”: A TWO-HUNDRED YEAR OLD TRADITION
\n
Kabazaiku was initiated by samurai warriors as a supplementary work task approximately 220 years ago during the Temmei Era. This craftsmanship was adopted by the townspeople of Kakunodate (Akita Prefecture), and continues to be perfected in an environment rich in culture. Natural cherry bark breathes. It handles moisture well. Its tough surface makes Kabazaiku craft-ware suitable for everyday use. An intricate relationship exists between cherry bark, wisdom, and the devotion of skilled craftsmen that brings about a special harmony found in unique and beautiful kabazaiku products.

For the casual matcha tea drinker, a reasonably priced chasen, or bamboo tea whisk is a must. The whisk allows you to froth up a bowl of matcha tea while breaking apart clumps.
\n
The Rikyu Chasen 利休茶筅 is named after the famous tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyu, and is made with dark bamboo, colored by charring the bamboo during creation.
\n
Whisk Guide
\n
The \"Number\" represents the approximate but not exact number of prongs, and the more prongs, the more froth or foam it produces. However, this is not an indication of better quality as some schools of tea ceremony frown upon froth. The biggest school of tea ceremony, Urasenke, teaches that an even level of froth is desirable, and so this has become standard among non-practitioners.
\n
Shape: The shape of this whisk is made according to Urasenke standards with the tips of the prongs curled inward.

Evoking the coolness water from a bubbling brook in the hot summer months, Ryo 涼 features a mixture of light blue, green and yellow strings, and encourages you to sip matcha iced to fend off the summer sun.
\n
The \"white\" bamboo 白竹 used for the whisk itself is henon bamboo (hachiku 淡竹) that has had its color removed through traditional, centuries-old techniques. A specific type of bamboo grown in the Kinki region of Japan (Nara, Kyoto, Osaka, Wakayama, etc) is harvested in the winter after 2-3 years of growth, boiled to remove oil in the plant, dried in the cold winter air, then aged for another 2-3 years. During this process the green color of the bamboo fades into the \"white\" color of bamboo.

\"White\" bamboo 白竹 is henon bamboo (hachiku 淡竹) that has had its color removed through traditional, centuries-old techniques.
